About the Irish Warriors
The Irish Warriors are the Irish men’s Australian Rules Football team and this year in August they will travel to Sydney and Melbourne to compete in the fourth International Cup of AFL.
The International Cup, originally known as the World Cup of Australian Football is for all nations playing AFL outside Australia. It is a true international festival of sport with competing nations coming from all over the globe from countries such as Canada, China, Italy, Fiji, India and New Zealand. The first competition was in 2002 and it has been held every three years since. This year will be the 4th competition with games scheduled from August 12th to 27th in Sydney and Melbourne. The tournament will visit some of the most famous stadiums in the world with games being played in Sydney’s ANZ Stadium (where the Sydney Olympics was held) and the most iconic ground of them all, the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Irish Warriors won the first International Cup in 2002 and reached the semi-final stage in 2005 and 2008. Confidence is high for 2011, having won the European Championships last year. This year’s team will probably be the strongest ever sent to represent Ireland in the competition. Find out more about the team on the ARFLI website. http://www.arfli.com/
