A score or not a score and other news

This weekend in the GAA football championship there was a very controversial incident involving Limerick and Wexford. The scores were tied at 1-17 each entering the final moments. Limerick win a free about 25 metres out. Scoring would put them into the All-Ireland quarter final for maybe the first time ever. The ball is kicked and it soared high, very high and the TV camera wasn’t conclusive.  The umpires weren’t sure either as one waved a score and the other waved the ball wide? Not a good situation and with no video ref a decision had to be made. The final say is with the referee. On this occasion it was Derek Fahy from Ballymahon in Longford, someone I was in school with. A very tough call but he gave the point and Limerick won.  I wouldn’t like to make the call myself and it might strengthen the argument for video refs or other technology like in cricket and tennis.

I’ve been watching the Tour de France with great interest for the last three weeks.  Aussie Cadel Evans won it in case you didn’t know.  He deserved if after several close calls in the past.  These guys are really made of iron and puts the efforts of most sports people to shame.  I heard he’s a Geelong fan, I wonder can he kick a footie?

I noticed a story on the AFL website about the Irish Warriors.  It was talking about the large Australain based contingent in the squad with 17 of our players already based in Oz.  In particular it discusses UTS Bats player and Roscommon man Roch Hanmore’s post match ritual of going silent.  I think I’m more likely to be silent before games than after them although if I lose you probably won’t get many words out of me for a while either.  You can read the story here http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/119425/default.aspx

Finally get well to club mate and Irish Warrior Darren Sheils, he got a bang on his nose playing against the Belfast Redbacks on Saturday.  His nose is probably still quite sore but he’s one tough cookie, the Swans won the game so I’m sure that made him feel better.
